.Brief:A man has drowned in the River Ribble in Preston.
Three fire crews, police and the ambulance service were on the scene close to The New Continental pub in South Meadow Lane, Broadgate, after reports of "someone in the water".

A search for a body involving a helicopter and lifeboat has been launched.

Eyewitness Preston Coates, a barman at the pub, said he watched on in horror as the man, who he described as Asian and in his late 20s, went under the water.

He said: "I felt a bit sick."

The North West Ambulance Service later confirmed the man had died and the police said they had called off the search for his body until Tuesday morning.
.My opinion:We should be more careful when we walk near river.

2.Chicken head horrified Preston shopper
.Key word:Chicken
.Main character:A stunned shopper bought a chicken from Preston's Asda store only to find its head still attached.
.Brief:A stunned shopper bought a chicken from Preston's Asda store only to find its head still attached.
Helen Kirby, 27, of Thistlecroft in Ingol, was horrified to discover it tucked under the body of the bird.

She brought the 'whole chicken' from the Asda store at Fulwood and immediately froze it.

Because the head was well hidden under the chicken's body, it was only when she put the bird in the oven to cook that she made what she describes as a "disgusting" discovery.

Bosses at Asda have apologised to Miss Kirby and confirmed they have given her £100 and a new vacuum cleaner in compensation.

Miss Kirby said: "I bought it a few weeks ago and put it in the freezer but when I took it out and cooked it, I saw its head and neck were tucked underneath.

"It was disgusting. It was cooked but I took it into the shop because they weren't answering the phones.

"At first they offered me my £5.90 back and a free meal but it has gone to their head office now."

A spokesman for Asda said: "I can confirm we gave Miss Kirby £100 and a new vacuum cleaner.

"We apologise for any inconvenience that Miss Kirby was subjected to as a result of this."
.My opinion:Food safety is a very important problem in the world.

3.Duck's speck-tacular rescue
.Key word:Duck
.Main character:A duck was rescued from a Lancashire canal - trapped in a pair of spectacles.
.Brief:A duck was rescued from a Lancashire canal - trapped in a pair of spectacles.
RSPCA inspectors were called to a stretch of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal close to Victoria Street in Clayton-le-Moors, Accrington, by members of the public who had noticed the male mallard duck struggling with the black plastic frames stuck around its neck.

A team of inspectors and animal welfare officers attended and carefully rescued the duck using a boat and specialist nets.

The duck was then taken to a nearby vet where the frames, which had cut slightly in to the duck's beak, were removed and antibiotics prescribed to help heal the wound.

The duck is now in the care of a private boarding establishment and is due to be re-released locally in the coming weeks.

RSPCA inspector Mandi Barr: "It was really sad to see this duck struggling and just shows the devastating effect litter can have on wildlife.

"Thankfully we were able to rescue him quickly, but, had we not been alerted to his plight, the outcome could have been much more tragic.

"We are regularly called out to rescue birds and animals tangled in litter and discarded fishing line, or injured from broken and dumped household appliances.

"The danger all these things pose to wildlife is substantial, even proving fatal in some cases, and the risk can be prevented by people taking responsibility for their litter.

"There are still far too many animals and birds suffering as a result of litter.

"Every animal trapped or injured because someone couldn't be bothered to dispose of their rubbish properly is one more than it should be."

Anyone who sees an animal or bird suffering should contact the RSPCA 24 hour hotline on 0300 1234 999.
.My opinion:Protecting animals is everyone's duty.

4.Christmas coming early to city centre
.Key word:city centre
.Main character:Christmas lights are already going up around Preston
.Brief:We have not quite turned the clocks back, but you may be mistaken for thinking Christmas is already upon us.
With two months left to Christmas, the city is about to dazzle with £55,000 of twinkly lights going up for the switch-on on November 21.
Meanwhile, supermarkets such as Asda in Fulwood are already awash with decorations, including Christmas trees, while selling seasonal merchandise.
Some shops in the city centre, such as the Card Factory in the Fishergate Centre, have been selling Christmas products since before the August Bank Holiday weekend.
But Deepdale Coun Terry Cartwright is unimpressed.
He said: "Christmas comes far too early. It should start on December 1, as by the time Christmas comes it's a damp squib.
"You wonder what someone would think if they came from another world and saw us running about being brainwashed by Christmas music.
"I was in a shop in the Mall and they were already playing Christmas music."
But Coun Cartwright was supportive of Christmas lights: "We have got to carry on with them as what is Christmas without lights? It's like a Scrooge Christmas."
Meanwhile, Stephen Parkinson, spokesman for the council, revealed the authority would be making parking free on its car parks on Sundays and Thursday nights in the run-up to Christmas.
He said of the lights: "It does take a few weeks to get all the lights up and to make sure they all work.
He also confirmed that the authority is still "in discussions" to bring a large "Preston Eye" type ferris wheel to the city after it was revealed neighbouring Blackburn has snapped up a 100ft high spinning wheel for its Christmas.
The city is also hoping to launch a Celeb in the City event every Saturday, where a mystery star will come through a giant advent calendar in a different part of the city.
The Preston Business Improvement District (BID) has confirmed it will promote the Celeb in the City event as part of a major advertising campaign on regional television.
.My opinion:People will have a more wonderful Christmas Day.
